Borrow or rent tools instead of buying

Tool libraries, rental counters and neighbors.

4 min read

For tools you'll use once or twice, buying rarely makes sense. Borrowing or renting saves money and storage space.

Where to look

  • Tool lending libraries, often run by public libraries or community groups
  • Home improvement store rental counters
  • Equipment rental shops for bigger items
  • Neighbors and Buy Nothing groups

Good to rent

  • Floor sanders and tile saws
  • Carpet cleaners
  • Pressure washers
  • Long extension ladders
  • Drain snakes for main lines (or call a plumber)

Before you rent

Ask for a demonstration, check the rental period, and inspect the tool for damage before you leave.
