Spot and avoid home repair scams
Door knockers, storm chasers and too-good deals.
Home repair scams often appear after storms or target older homeowners. Knowing the signs makes them easy to avoid.
Warning signs
- Unrequested visits saying they "noticed a problem" or have "leftover materials"
- Pressure to sign or pay today
- Cash only, or large payment up front
- No written contract, license or local address
- Offers to handle your insurance claim for you
Protect yourself
- Never let someone you don't know inspect your roof or attic alone
- Get quotes from local, licensed contractors you contact yourself
- Know your right to cancel: the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you three days to cancel many sales made at your home over a certain amount, and some states add more protection
- Report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state attorney general
