Guides / DIY or hire
DIY or hire? Five questions to decide
Safety first, then skills, tools, time and the real savings.
Doing a repair yourself can save a lot, or cost more when it goes wrong. Five honest questions sort most jobs quickly.
The five questions
- Is it safe for me to do? Gas, electrical panels, structure, roofs and heights usually mean no.
- Does it need a permit or a licensed trade where I live?
- Have I done something similar, or is there a clear, trusted guide?
- What tools do I need, and will I use them again?
- After materials, tools and my time, how much do I really save?
Count the hidden costs
- Tools you'd buy just for this job
- Extra materials for mistakes
- Trips to the store
- The cost of a pro fixing it if it goes wrong
- Your weekend
Middle ground
Some jobs split well: do the demolition, prep or painting yourself and hire a pro for the skilled part. Ask contractors whether they'll price it that way.
General educational information. Follow product instructions and local codes, and hire a licensed pro for gas, electrical panels, structure and roofs. Home Nickel Pro isn't paid by any contractor, store or brand.
