Know your limits: DIY safety basics

Ladders, protective gear, lead paint and asbestos.

6 min read

Most DIY injuries come from ordinary things: ladders, power tools and dust. A few habits prevent most of them.

Everyday safety

  • Use a ladder rated for your weight plus tools, on firm level ground, and keep three points of contact
  • Wear safety glasses with power tools and when working overhead
  • Use hearing protection with loud tools, and gloves suited to the task
  • Turn off power at the breaker and test with a voltage tester before touching wiring
  • Turn off water before plumbing work

Older homes

  • Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint; sanding or scraping it creates dangerous dust. Test first, or use an EPA lead-safe certified contractor
  • Some older materials, like certain ceiling textures, pipe insulation and floor tiles, may contain asbestos. Don't disturb them; have them tested by a professional
