When to stop and call a pro right away

Some problems aren't DIY at any price.

Saving money never outweighs safety. These signs mean stop, make the area safe if you can do so without risk, and call for help.

Leave and call from outside

  • You smell gas: leave, don't use switches or flames, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside
  • Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds: get everyone outside and call 911

Call a licensed pro

  • Sparking, burning smells, hot outlets or a breaker that keeps tripping
  • Water spreading that you can't stop at a shutoff valve
  • New cracks in walls or ceilings that are growing, or doors that suddenly stick
  • Sewage backing up
  • No heat in freezing weather

Know your shutoffs

Before an emergency, find the main water shutoff, the electrical panel and the gas shutoff, and make sure everyone at home knows where they are.

General educational information. Follow product instructions and local codes, and hire a licensed pro for gas, electrical panels, structure and roofs. Home Nickel Pro isn't paid by any contractor, store or brand.
